How One Click LCA supports the contest?

The goal of the Architecture Student Contest is to create a project that prioritizes sustainability for both people and the planet. The designs focus on energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions and ensuring a comfortable environment for the occupants, aiming to enhance living, working and recreational spaces universally.

This training will guide participants from understanding embodied carbon principles to producing an LCA assessment suitable for integration into their contest project. Using One Click LCA, students are able to...

  • Evaluate the embodied carbon of their proposal;

  • Compare design options and material choices;

  • Identify the main carbon hotspots;

  • Include key environmental results in their final submission.

What you will learn

The purpose of Life Cycle Assessment is not only to measure environmental impacts, but also to improve design decisions. Participants are encouraged to use LCA throughout the design process to compare alternatives and identify opportunities to reduce embodied carbon.

  • The construction sector's impact on the environment, the need for building sustainability, and the regulations driving change.

  • The LCA core concepts, including standards, building life-cycle stages, environmental impact assessment, and the data required for performing LCAs.

  • Practical building LCA software training based on the EU Level(s) framework.

  • How to automate LCA data imports from BIM models and how to perform building LCA at early stages of a project using the Carbon Designer 3D tool.

  • How to compare design options and material selections using LCA results to minimise embodied carbon.

Suggested learning journey

  • September-October

    Students are recommended to explore the available courses and introductory modules at academy.oneclicklca.com

  • November-December

    Attend the 1st live session for embodied carbon, or watch it on demand. Explore and include concepts for your project.

  • January-April

    Attend the 2nd live session for the software onboarding, or watch it on demand. Begin modelling your project with One Click LCA, and use it to compare design options. Generate final results and reports for your submission.

Expected outcomes

At the end of the course, the student should be able to...

  • Model their project in One Click LCA and use the different tools provided;

  • Perform a whole life cycle carbon assessment, and understand the key concepts;

  • Identify the most impactful materials and systems and provide justified alternatives;

  • Generate a project report and summarise the key findings for inclusion in the ASC submission.

LCA practitioners and One Click LCA

Professional practitioners can use One Click LCA to...

  • Compare different building elements and systems to identify the sources of carbon emissions and provide justified alternatives.

  • Assess and compare different kinds of building projects, such as renovation vs. new construction, embodied vs. operational, carbon vs. other environmental indicators.

  • Evaluate material alternatives to support sustainable procurement decisions and quantify embodied carbon reductions.

What our students think

“I learned that life cycle thinking is fundamental to delivering a sustainable building. I also learned that with One Click, the optimization process is almost ‘easy’ and facilitates good collaboration. Felt that the whole circularity piece and being able to measure that is also very powerful. Thanks for such a great course and for sharing such great insights!”

Lucienne Mosquera (Hotel Life Cycle | Footprint | Assessment | Costing | Strategy)

“Thank you to the team for putting together this summer school. The team showed us as much as they could about the One Click LCA tool and I agree that it is indeed very versatile and user-friendly. Thank you for bringing clarity to the difference between the two assessment methods for LCI data characterization -TRACI & CML. That is one of my takeaways from the introductory sessions. Now, we keep working and building on what we learned.”

Tunde Okeowo (Tech IOSH, Public Health at HarvardX)

“Thank you very much for a wonderful summer school course. That was very helpful for my Ph.D. research. I have learned a lot and broadened my knowledge in LCA and how we can optimize carbon reduction for buildings. Looking forward to attending other training courses in the future if any.”

Thao Bui (Alice) (Ph.D. Candidate at Massey University)

“Thanks so much for this great summer school course. It was my first time learning about this subject and using any tools for embodied carbon. Definitely learned a lot and can't wait until LCA becomes a mandatory requirement in North America and Asia. Embodied energy really is the next big thing we need to be focusing on, for us to build and have a better future. Many thanks, again.”

April Wang (Green Building Strategist at Recollective Consulting)

“I want to say thank you to all the One Click LCA team for the summer school!!! You put so much effort into preparing information for the 3 weeks course, was so professional with different LCA and sustainability subjects, and was so patient with replaying all our questions.”

Lina Šeduikytė (Professor at Kaunas University of Technology)

“Thank you very much for such a wonderful summer school, which has a complete understanding about LCA, tutors were incredible. ONE CLICK LCA is a great tool. Answering so many questions made us easy to understand.. along with the informative lectures.. Thank you so much to the team of One Click LCA.”

Medha Naik (Architect, Sustainability consultant, IGBC AP)

“Thank you so much One Click LCA team. This was really a great summer school, I was able to understand the concepts so well and the exam was a great experience to reinforce my knowledge.”

Monisha Royan (Analyst at International WELL Building Institute (IWBI))

“Thank you so much for offering this course for free. I am glad I got the opportunity to attend this summer school with such amazing tutors. This course is designed to help you get exposed to the One Click LCA Software, through interactive online sessions and formative assessment and feedback. It gives you a comprehensive view of the main resources on how to decarbonize our buildings through life cycle assessment over a 3 weeks period . I loved the discussion forums and all the support provided by the panellist, and all professors showed a high level of expertise and professionalism. Many thanks to the whole LCA team for their efforts! Highly recommended.”

Chaza Rammal (Chemical Engineer | Interested iSustainability, Energy Transition & Decarbonization Strategies)

“A great tool, great course and amazing tutors - especially taking the time to answer the hundreds of questions after each class! Thanks to the One click team for this course and their efforts.”

Jacob Mathew (Energy Engineer | Architectural Engineer, United Arab Emirates)

“It was a great pleasure to take part in the summer school. Really an amazing team and so much knowledge. The team really put forward all the learning in an easy and straightforward way. I can highly recommend anyone interested in LCA to attend the next summer school. Thank you very much One Click LCA Steven Zijlstra Panu Pasanen.”
